One of my favourite authors is Hugh Mackay. We have a lot in common. A passion for understanding how the human mind works and how we relate to one another. Continue reading “The Cult of Happiness”
Sacred

The large dark skinned man is about to enter the secluded sandy pathway ahead of me, his friend, who is behind me, calls him back. They let me go on ahead, and they both follow closely behind to a place I’d never been before … Continue reading “Sacred”
Real or Imagined?

I have spent four years writing my debut memoir. One of the themes in the book is real versus imagined fear. Continue reading “Real or Imagined?”
Blood in the Water

Social Media: Does it bring us together, drive us apart or leave us more isolated?
I almost died this week. No, I’m not exaggerating and I’m still checking myself hourly to make sure I can see, think and speak clearly. Continue reading “Blood in the Water”
Triggering a Change

This could be the most important photo you see all year!
My heart was pounding and I hid under my hat like a criminal who was planning to commit a crime as I waited for the queue to disperse in front of the deli counter in a supermarket.
When it was all clear, I chose an employee who looked kind and competent and gingerly asked if I could buy 2 kilos of uncooked chicken wings and have them put straight into my re-usable container. The lady behind the counter looked startled and said she had to ask the manager, she returned a few minutes later saying it was OK.
She set the scales to deduct the weight of the container and stuck the barcode sticker straight onto the outside of my re-usable plastic container, which I then scanned at the self-serve terminal.
I feel like I have just changed the world. Stay tuned for more plastic reduction updates.
Freak

Deep

Deep. How much courage does it take to go deep, deep into the darkness, to spend time and explore what is in the crevices or our psyche? Continue reading “Deep”
A Good Man

I was recovering from a broken heart, when a shy man entered my orbit. I was an extrovert, Tim was an introvert. Conversations were stilted, but there was something about this guy … Continue reading “A Good Man”
My World Ended in a River: Is This Me? (Prologue)
I open the door and run. The suburb is unfamiliar; I don’t know where to go. My mind is a blur as hot misery whips into my eyes, like sleet in a storm. My bare foot lands on a concrete footpath, a tear splats beside it; which way? Continue reading “My World Ended in a River: Is This Me? (Prologue)”
